A 16-year-old high school student in Southern California, who was seriously injured during a football game last month, Player died this week.
Christopher Garcia, a 16-year-old from South East High School in Los Angeles, participated in the junior varsity game against the Maywood Center for Enriched Studies on August 23. At that time he was seriously injured during a tackle that injured his brain.
Two medics were on the scene at the time of the incident and he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, authorities said.
“I am saddened by the news of the death of one of our students, and on behalf of our entire school community, I want to extend my deepest condolences,” Southeast High School Principal Eric Jaimes announced in a message to the school community Wednesday.
He said in a statement, Christopher died of his brain injury.
“At least one medical specialist must be present at every football match,” the spokesman said in a statement.
According to the annual report, 16 high school, middle school, youth league and collegiate football players died last year, 13 of which were directly or indirectly related to football.
